Pneumonia is an ancient Greek word which means lungs. It is an infection which may be caused due to many reasons but mainly by bacteria. The infection of pneumonia affects your lungs getting them inflamed and cause severe coughing problem.
It is a disease which has nothing to do with age and can affect anyone. However, small children and older people are at higher risk of getting affected with this complication. The penetration of small microorganisms inside our lungs during breathing is the main cause of this infection.
We are inhaling polluted air today which contains foreign materials like dust particles, liquid droplets; chemical fumes are harmful for our body. These particles enter our body and cause complications like breathing problems, chest pain, lungs inflammation etc. This is pathophysiology of pneumonia.
The disease of pneumonia starts with very common symptoms like cough, chest pain, sore throat, mild fever and headache. It is thus many times confused with flu like common disease. However, it should be kept in mind that if not taken care, the pneumonia symptoms suffering patient may get serious complications like severe coughing and inflammation of lungs with unbearable chest pain. It is thus advised to see your doctor as soon as you doubt any symptom of pneumonia.
Feeling of fatigue is a common complain of the patients of pneumonia. Sweating and sometimes clammy skin may be the problem. Most of the people suffering from pneumonia go through excessive weakness and decreased appetite.
Doctors call pneumonia as a serious complication as it advances to blood poisoning and severe respiratory distress. The simplest fact of pneumonia is that it is a bacterial disease and thus can only be treated with antibiotics. It is seen in most cases that people suffering from cough problem take simple cough syrup but their situation go worse and these cough syrups do not work. It is so because their case may be of pneumonia which can only be treated by antibiotics. Coughing problem in the case of pneumonia go worse with chest pain and breathing problem. Pneumonia is contagious and thus should be taken care.
